Opus One 2019: A Symphony of Elegance and Tradition
Introduction
Opus One is not just a wine but a legendary expression of collaboration, heritage, and a shared vision of excellence. Born from the partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, two of the most iconic figures in the wine world, this wine stands as a testament to the marriage of Old World tradition and New World innovation. This Napa Valley masterpiece continues to be one of the most sought-after and celebrated wines globally, representing the pinnacle of winemaking artistry.
Tasting Notes
This is a wine of extraordinary depth and complexity, offering a symphony of aromas and flavors that evolve with time. In the glass, it presents a deep, opaque ruby color, hinting at its richness and concentration.
On the nose, it reveals an intricate bouquet of dark fruits, including blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, interwoven with notes of violet, graphite, and cedar. Subtle hints of vanilla, chocolate, and espresso, derived from the new French oak barrels, add layers of complexity.
The palate is equally impressive, with a full-bodied and opulent texture that is balanced by fine, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity. Flavors of ripe blackberries and cassis dominate, with secondary notes of tobacco, earth, and spice emerging as the wine opens up. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lasting impression of finesse and harmony.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Opus one is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes, particularly those that feature rich and savory flavors. Its depth and complexity make it an excellent match for red meats, game, and hearty stews.
For a classic pairing, consider serving with a perfectly cooked filet mignon, ribeye steak, or lamb chops. The wine’s tannins and acidity will complement the richness of the meat, while its fruit and spice notes enhance the dish’s flavors.
This wine also pairs well with aged cheeses, such as Comté, Gruyère, or a well-aged Cheddar. The wine’s complexity and structure can stand up to the intense flavors of these cheeses, creating a balanced and harmonious pairing.
For a more adventurous pairing, try it with dishes that incorporate earthy elements, such as truffle risotto or mushroom-based dishes. The wine’s earthy undertones and velvety texture will enhance the umami flavors, creating a luxurious dining experience.

Wow! A bit weak on the nose but develops a lot – so don’t rush it. On the palate you have a lot of saffron leather, blackberries pepper and some vanilla. 2018 and 2019 are very similar.

Youthful, this wine is expressive and far from tight, yet the age worthy structure all but begs you not to drink it so young.
These wines are always majority Cabernet Sauvignon hailing to the Mouton connection and the old “Napa Medoc” project name. The 2019 is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon but then 8% Merlot which is a bit of a deviation from the norm as most vintages l’ve tasted have Cabernet Franc as the next highest percentage. 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec complete the picture for this wine.

Silky, opulent, polished and rich, une dense, full-bodied wine unpacking of its chocolate covered dark cherries, blackberry, cigar box, tobacco, bell pepper, savory, good minerality licorice, spice box and floral character with ease. With all the fruit, freshness, lovely one
